Part 3. Sacha Baba and Japa

Japa or Repetition of Holy Words1

The “Word” is God, and God is Truth. A human being in his actions, work, bravery, religion and efforts wants to realize this Truth. The Word is the only basis by which men and God interconnect. On subtle levels the Word is a form of God. It is a play of God and it is an action of God. To play and do something, two elements or two factors are necessary. Without two elements there is no play. In this play of duality God comes and goes in the form of the Word. The essence of achievement in life and the destiny of human beings is with the Word. If the Word disappears from people’s lives, they become like statues with emotions. One becomes mute, neither able to express feelings, nor do anything to fulfil one’s emotions.

The simple meaning of japa is to repeat a few holy words again and again. Growth comes to the spiritual seeker by doing the japa. Rishis or realized beings have already tested this. Since Vedic times we have heard about and seen the greatness of japa. It is an open Truth. Everyone can use and test it. According to the philosophy of japa the word is God and we can reach God by repetition of sacred words. Today also it is often seen that many seekers are successful in obtaining siddhis, by repeating mantras.

Eternal and full of good qualities, Sacha Baba’s method of japa uses the same principle. Just like when one learns to talk and gets to know any language, it is necessary to know the alphabet, and after learning the alphabet, it is also necessary to learn its grammar, in the same way, to understand the word of God, it necessary to learn His alphabet, and to know how to put it into practice.

The alphabet of the word of God is called bija. The simple meaning of bija is “something which contains everything”. For example, in the seed of a tree, the whole tree is potentially hidden. In the same way the word of God is also like a seed.

Sacha Baba received a special mantra by which we can attain Self-Realization. This mantra Sacha Baba gives to his authorized disciples privately, and Masters of the Sacha lineage can pass it on to their disciples. This practice still goes on. It is not right to write this mantra here, because it is very strong and gives immediate results. If one is not ready for it, but knows the secret words and begins to use them, it can be dangerous. If a spiritual seeker wants to know its secret and realize the power of the word of God, he can receive initiation through it from Masters of the Sacha lineage.

Saint Sacha Baba Hans Rajji and disciples

In accordance with the order of Gurus and the Scriptures, we have not written this mantra here for two reasons; first of all, if a mantra is given to a disciple by a Guru, that mantra is initiated or awakened by that Guru and it has tremendous power, far greater than by just learning this mantra from a book. Indeed, when the Guru gives a mantra, the mantra is enhanced by the power of the Guru, the Guru’s wisdom of the mantra and the entire power of the Lineage. Secondly, if someone uses it after reading it, he may misuse it. Consequently, to get the benefit of a mantra it is best to receive it from the Guru. Then results are assured.

That is why I request that people who are ready, go to a true Guru and become initiated by him in the right manner, and afterwards repeat the mantra according to that Guru’s teachings. What makes this bija mantra special is that after making a little effort, the japa begins to show its nature. Then the seeker no longer needs to repeat it. The japa itself holds him, and begins to reveal its mysteries, according to the level of the spiritual seeker. Then the seeker needs not do anything. On waking in the morning, sitting or doing work, the japa becomes automatic.

However the japa's essence does not start to work in a spiritual seeker as long as he is not initiated by a Guru — one who has awakened this mantra in himself. All mantras are dead unless they have been awakened.

So before we can start with japa, we need the perfect Guru, who can awaken our soul through the medium of a mantra. Only a perfect Guru can do that. Otherwise that mantra will be fruitless. After cleansing ourselves from the impressions of past karmas it takes us to the source from which we have fallen.

The bija of Sacha Baba is for the benefit of everyone, men, women, students, everyone in the whole world. So I recommend to all, that before you give this mantra a place in your life, you should get initiated by a Master of the Sacha lineage, and then begin your work. This is the main instruction.

1. In this period of evolution called Kali Yuga, characterised by matter strongly resisting the spirit, all sages have stressed how much the easiest path for men to attain liberation is the repetition of the name of God. This repetition is called japa, and is one of the techniques that the Sacha lineage uses to awaken disciples to the Eternal truth. Sacha Baba used it and made a particular contribution to this technique, as Maharajji reveals.
